About Us

Most of the Young-Aviators volunteers are pilots, and pilots by their nature love to fly and share the experience with others. We started this program in 2008, to use aviation as an appetizer to get young people excited about Science Technology Engineering & Math. Our goal is not to produce the next generation of pilots. It is to get students interested in S.T.E.M. careers. All training is done in a pleasant, informal atmosphere at the EAA Chapter 838, located at Batten International Airport, in Racine, Wisconsin. The program runs for one week, and takes place in early August each summer. During the class week, a student receives 40 hours of classroom study in physics, chemistry and math related to aviation. Mixed in with instruction by flight instructors in FAA certified aircraft and simulators the goal is to send graduates home with five hours of flight time, five hours of simulator time and a lifetime understanding that, with proper instruction, virtually anything is possible.

"Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives."  — Socrates

The U.S. needs more engineers and scientists if we are to maintain our position as the world technology leader. It is alarming to know that every year both China and India now graduate more…ten times more…engineers and scientists than we do. And, the gap continues to widen.

STEM oriented education programs like Young Aviators play an urgently needed role that helps “light the spark” of interest and encourages American boys and girls to enroll in technical & scientific curriculums. Doing so will help them succeed in the “Information Age” and be a resource to shape the future success of our country.

Young-Aviators is a Wisconsin based, volunteer led, non-profit 501 [C] 3 corporation registered with the IRS and the State of Wisconsin. Donations are tax deductible and necessary. Donations are tax deductible and urgently needed. Tuition fees, when families can afford to pay them, cover less than one third of actual program costs. Raising the remainder is a challenging job. We are fortunate that support for our Young Aviators program comes from friends, local businesses, industrial firms, corporations, foundations, service groups and Racine's EAA Chapter 838. Summer Program Operations are conducted by a staff of unpaid volunteers and a distinguished group of professional flight and simulator instructors. The five day Program Week is a remarkable blending of adults, kids, aviation classes, a hangar workshop, tools, aircraft parts, simulators, and airplanes -- all focused on learning, flying, and having fun.
